The starting point for the new era is the cover of British Vogue January 1990, under the tacit title «Supermodel Birth Certificate». In the 70-s and 80-s: the word «model» will come into use, new standards of beauty will be formulated, and the profession itself will become prestigious, because in order to be a successful model you will need charisma in the first place. However, such a resounding popularity finally led to blurring the boundaries between a simple fashion model and a cover girl. In her childhood and teenage rarity, Twiggy was so unique that she could have rather been considered the muse of the entire fashion industry, rather than just a model. The first truly famous name in pop culture appeared only in the 60-s: Twiggy! The image of a clumsy teenager with a cheeky pixie-haircut was revolutionary and very trendy among the fashion audience of that time. The picture of the united body canon, such as its parameters, was formed only after the Second World War, partly owing to the concept of Christian Dior New Look: high chest, very thin waist and rounded hips. The fashion model of the first half of the 20th century did not embody the generally accepted idea of beauty: depending on trends, their outlook could have been changed, but the «model's body» was relative to the average female body, because the models job was demonstrating clothes on «real» people, since it was considered commercially more profitable. However, everything is different nowadays, and people who do PR for fashion brands on Instagram, can be even more influential than the brands themselves.

They were called «mannequins» (french), and the job itself was not considered prestigious, being rather marginal, not usually pursued by worthy girls from decent, respected families.

For almost the entire past century, the term «model» referred to women walking the runway, has not been used at all. In this column, we talk a lot about the modern fashion industry, review new collections and street style, but, we never had a discussion about the most significant part of the industry - models.
