If you do a burnout for less than 2.5 seconds, you will still get a smaller grip boost, for it linearly builds it up. This is also visually shown with the back tire turning red hot. 2.5 seconds of burnout will give you the maximum grip boost possible which will then linearly diminish when you lift the brake and get going. When fully upgraded, the burnout gives a total of 6.5x multiplier to the grip.
